Mike’s Sister…

Mike’s Place, Jerusalem
Fall 12

A sculpture of found objects (wooden table, plank, skirt). The full title of the piece
is “Mike’s Sister, circa winter 1978, her lips like candy cane”. The sculpture is dedicated to a friend’s sister. It is an unusual piece for me in that it is figurative and has a direct autobiographic element.

Mike and I were good friends during the winter of 1978. We hung out, did our paper routes together, played games, listened to music, and did all that seventh grade boys could do. Mike had a sister who was about a year younger, who sometimes joined us in playing games and listening to music. I hope this sculpture is enough to bring back winter break, Monopoly, too much candy, and the longing to grow up, and the longing to change the past.

When I saw the sculpture last, she was standing on top of the refrigerator unit in the basement of Mike’s Place, Jafo Street, Jerusalem. I donated the sculpture to the bar. Let me know if she is still there.

Look real close at the one on the right. You can make out a person standing right “in front” of that sculpture, where the upper half is being “filled in”. Surreal!
