Student Work, Public Choreography, In class assignment

Art 318, Non-Static Forms
Fall 2004

Students develop a solo path through a public space with increasing levels of complexity. As the exercise progresses, students begin to relate to each other’s choreography and develop an improvised dance performance. Students learn how to notate actions (quantity and qualities), how to develop interest over time (rising/falling actions), how to structure patterns and textures in time (body and voice), how to integrate actions into pre-existing spaces (context), how to observe and improvise. An additional benefit for the students is they quickly become less self-conscious in public, learning to overcome shyness, inhibitions, and anxieties.

Students work in small groups to develop poems, songs, and dances from found materials. Over two class sessions, students learn how to work collaboratively, use found materials, and overcome issues about making work in front of an audience. They also learn how to compose in time and space, how to notate sound and movement. This poem/song was produced from newspaper cuttings.
